About the ELR Bury Diesel Group
The Bury Diesel Group is the organisation incorporating all the resident diesel locomotive and DMU owners, owning groups and other volunteers.
The individual owners of the first preserved locomotives to arrive at the Bury site formed the Bury Hydraulic Group (BHG). These locos were Class 52 D1041 'WESTERN PRINCE', Class 42 Warship D832 'ONSLAUGHT', Hymek D7076 and Class 14 D9531.
By the time East Lancashire Railway obtained its initial Light Railway Order and began running trains in 1987, two more ex-main line locomotives had joined the fleet. These were Class 40, D345 / 40145 and Class 24, D5054 / 24054.
The present Bury Diesel Group is made up of the following owning organisations or representatives (with links to separate websites where available):
- The Bury Diesel Multiple Unit Group (BDMUG), owners of the Class 105 Cravens set
- The Bury Hydraulic Group (BHG), representing D832, D1041, D7076 and D9531
- The Bury Type 2 Group, owners of D5054 / 24054
- The Pioneer Diesel Locomotive Group, owners of 45135
- The Class Forty Preservation Society (CFPS), owners of D335 / 40135 and D345 / 40145
- The Deltic Preservation Society (DPS), 55019 working group, although the loco has now left ELR
- The Manchester Class Fifty Group, owners of 50015
Other ex-main line locomotives are owned by trusts, individuals, or groups of individuals. Shunting locomotives and other DMU's are owned by ELR. All locos and DMU's (except the ELR Loco Works pilot 08 shunter) are maintained and operated by the ELR Bury Diesel Group.
